Instructions
Since many gardens are oddly shaped it is often simpler to estimate an unusually shaped area by breaking it into several smaller areas. Look for small sections that can be approximated as a square, rectangular or circular area
It may help to draw out a plan of your garden on paper with any buildings, driveways, sidewalks and other non-planted areas identified. Next identify the areas you want to put lawn on and divide all areas into the largest squares, rectangles or circles possible. Then for each of these areas record:
a name for the area
the type of area (square, rectangle or circle) NOTE: Include whether circles are full, 1/2, 1/4 or 3/4.
and the dimensions.
Once you have the dimensions, enter the information - ONE AREA AT A TIME - in the My Lawn Area input section above on the left. As each area is entered press the "Add This Area " button and the information will be added to the Result box to the right and the total area will be accumulated in the Total Lawn Area box.
The accuracy of this result is entirely dependent on the information you enter about the size of sections of your garden.
Area Type - Any odd shaped area can be subdivided into a combination of squares, rectangles and circles or parts of circles. Or, they can be roughly estimated as one of the above. Take a look at the area you want to work with and break it down into the largest of these three types of areas that you can. Record a name, shape and dimensions of each area. Then enter it above to get a total.
Square - For square areas you only need to enter the length or width because they are the same number. The Turf Area Calculator will do the rest.
Rectangle - For rectangles you need a length and width measurement. It doesn't matter which is which for the purposes of this calculation.
Circle - It is easiest usually to measure or estimate the diameter (the distance across the center) of a circular area. If you can more easily measure the radius (the distance from the center to the outside edge) then just multiply this number by two (2) to get the diameter to enter above. The box to the right of the diameter allows you to specify parts of a circle instead of an entire circle including "Full", "1/2", "1/4" and "3/4". The default is a full circle.
Area Name - This name is just for your reference. Use names that mean something to you such as "back lawn" or "right side lawn" and "left side lawn ".
Dimensions - If your measurements are in metres the total area will be in square metres. Likewise if your measurements are in feet the total area will be in square feet. If you switch from feet to meters or meters to feet after some areas have already been entered, there will be some rounding errors introduced in the conversions. Switching dimensions is best done before any areas are entered. However, the Turf Area Calculator will correctly maintain the total in whichever dimensions you choose.
